The optimal solution for the cells in the body is an isotonic solution. This can be accomplished through a process called 'osmolarity,' which refers to the total concentration of dissolved particles in a liquid.

The osmolarity inside and outside the cells is defined by 3 terms: hypertonic, hypotonic, and isotonic. 

Hypertonic - when the fluid outside of the cells (extracellular fluid) has higher osmolarity (higher concentration of solutes), fluid will move from the cell to the area of higher concentration of solutes.

Hypotonic - when the fluid outside the cells has lower osmolarity (lower concentration of solutes), fluid will go into the cell.

Isotonic   -   when the extracellular and cell fluids have the same osmolarity there is no fluid movement either way, the cellular environment is balanced.
